Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to question specific calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
